Whether you’re moving for the first time or the seventh, looking for a new home can be exciting! Finding balances of proximity, space, comfort and affordability are important. Here are some ideas for searching for your new home.

Here are tips everyone should know!

  1. Stick to your budget!

A budget is a critical component for living within your means. Your budget should include bills, like car payment, student loans, utilities, and needs to include savings plans as well. Remember utilities, HOA fees, and other expenses will vary. Consider these costs that may be additional to rent when deciding your housing budget.

  1. Determine the cost of living in the location that you love.

Cities have higher costs of living than other locations. It can be tempting to live in the heart of all the action, but rent, gas, groceries, utilities, and other costs are much higher than living in a suburb. Do your research and know what your options are so that you can make an informed decision.

  1. Consider a roommate.

Especially if you are single, cost of living can be come quite expensive and may slow down your financial goals. It may be a good solution to share the prices of rent and utilities. A roommate could also mean that you are able to afford a larger space in a more desirable location. A roommate will also decrease the cost of decorating. Sharing these costs gives you more financial freedom.

  1. Make the most of your tour.

Most places have websites with virtual tour options. This is a great way to look at options and make comparisons to narrow down options. There is a lot that you can learn from an online tour. Write down pros/ cons and even questions. Researchings can help you know exactly what you’re looking for. When you tour in person, look at everything! Open closets and cabinets, check out the cleanliness of shared spaces, like the lobby and elevators, look at how/ where the trash is collected, and whatever else you are curious about! Remember, this is a place where you may live. Being as informed as possible can help you make your choice.

  1. Ask all your questions!

Remember your research and your lists of pros/ cons and questions? When you are on a tour it is time to ask ALL your questions! Take your list with you and write down answers as you receive them but also write more as you tour. Once a lease is signed, you are committed! You deserve to know what you are signing up for, so ask away!
